Gemotions

“Oh my God,” Elizabeth whispered, the breath knocked out of her. The script was hers, but she no longer knew that person. The letter to her best friend, unmailed for thirty years, was a snapshot of a life she no longer lived. She looked at her reflection in the window, but the face she saw was that of a stranger.

She reread the words, the familiar yet foreign declarations of ambition, doubt, and fragile hope. The words seemed to echo in the cavernous space. The room seemed to spin around her.

She touched her chest, trying to calm her racing heart. She read of a life that could have been, a life she’d forgotten. The emotions felt like a punch to the gut. She had no words.
