The boardroom door creaked open, and Emily watched the parade of executives emerge, their faces a carefully constructed mask of composure. She, a junior marketing assistant, had been asked to fetch coffee. She had never been so close to such important people. She’d always admired them, their ability to be calm even under pressure. Now, however, their usual elegance felt somehow brittle, fragile. She found herself transfixed, frozen in place. The gleaming chrome of the coffee machine seemed impossibly bright, reflecting her own bewildered expression.
