“Eviction?” David repeated, his voice barely a whisper. The landlord's words resonated in his ears, a pronouncement of something colossal and unknown. He slowly sat down on the stoop, the cold concrete seeping into his bones. The world around him shimmered, colors brighter, sounds more distinct. He stared at the vibrant green leaves of a nearby tree, the intricate patterns of the bark. He had never noticed such delicate details before. His mind struggled to process it all, to understand the implications, the sudden and dramatic shift. It was beyond expectation.
