The letter, cool and impersonal in her hand, had the opposite effect on Janice. She felt no anger, no fear. Instead, a sense of disbelief – a marvel. She studied the details of the apartment with newfound fascination. The way the light hit the chipped paint on the wall, the way the shadows fell in the corner, the tiny cracks in the windowpane.
