Gemotions

The attic air hung thick with dust motes dancing in the lone sunbeam. Sarah, perched precariously on a rickety stool, brushed a cobweb from a dusty wooden trunk. Her fingers, usually clumsy, moved with a surprising tenderness. Inside, nestled amongst moth-eaten shawls and yellowed photographs, was a single sheet of paper. Her father's handwriting, bold and familiar, filled the page. She traced the loops of the letters with a fingertip, a tremor running through her.

The date at the top, October 1987, felt like a secret whispered from the past. He'd never spoken of leaving his job at the bank, the career he’d dedicated his life to. A lump formed in her throat.

She leaned closer, the scent of aged paper and forgotten things filling her lungs. The words were a revelation, a quiet rebellion she'd never known. He’d cited "irreconcilable differences" with the management. Sarah, reading on, felt a strange lightness, a sense of wonder at the man who had always seemed so steady, so… predictable.
