“I… I don’t believe this,” Leo stammered, staring at the letter. He’d found it in the mailbox after a grueling day at work. The envelope looked like it had been through a war. His stomach churned.

He felt as if the ground beneath him had dissolved. His knees threatened to buckle. The words blurred on the page; he couldn’t focus. He felt a peculiar lightness, as if he were floating outside of his body. He fumbled for his phone, then quickly dropped it, letting it crash to the floor.

A wave of nausea washed over him. The air seemed thin, difficult to breathe. He leaned against the wall, trying to regain his equilibrium, the letter still clutched in his trembling hand.
