The absence was the most prominent feature of the scene. The gap where the cherry tree had stood, now filled with an unsettling void. His breath caught in his throat.

He approached cautiously, each step a testament to his mounting disbelief. He paused at the edge of the space, his eyes scanning the empty landscape. His jaw tightened and his hands clenched.

He stared at the stump, the exposed rings, and a peculiar lightness overcame him. He felt as though he might float away. He didn't know how to handle the sudden shift. He felt as though he were suddenly floating outside his own body.

"What…" he started, but the rest of the sentence died in his throat.
