The detective’s voice, calm and professional, detailed the scene: the struggle, the shadows, the silence that followed. Emily listened, her breath held captive in her chest. She stood in the master bedroom, the room she’d meticulously decorated, suddenly viewing it with a new, unsettling clarity.

She hugged herself, rubbing her arms. The polished wooden floor seemed to reflect an age, a story of the terrible thing that had happened here.
