"There's something I need to tell you," Sarah's mother had said, her voice unusually hesitant. Sarah had braced herself for the worst, a medical diagnosis, a financial hardship. Instead, the bomb dropped. A brother, older than her, and living a few states away.

She’d spent the rest of the day in a daze, wandering through her apartment like a ghost. Each room seemed different, alien. The familiar objects around her were somehow transformed. She picked up a photo of her mom and looked at it with fresh eyes, trying to reconcile the woman she knew with the secret she’d kept.

Later, she found herself staring out the window, watching the street below. How would he feel? Would he want to meet? Her heart pounded in her chest, a frantic drumbeat against her ribs. The world was a different place now.
