The concert hall felt excessively warm, the rows of empty chairs seeming to press in on Amelia. Across the stage, Ben was tuning his grand piano, his face illuminated by the stage lights. The music was his… or hers? The opening bars of their original composition filled the hall, the melody weaving a familiar spell. A hot flush spread across her cheeks.

She clenched her fists, her knuckles turning white. The music seemed to build, reaching a crescendo of emotion, echoing her own internal storm. She felt a strange tingling sensation, a sense of disembodied presence.

Ben turned towards her, a bemused expression on his face. “Well, that was unexpected, wasn’t it? I thought I was the only one in the world that knew those chords.”
