The email arrived at precisely 8:00 AM, a crisp, clean message from a law firm. It stated, with a formal brevity, that Mr. Finch, her next-door neighbor, was the sole beneficiary of a recently deceased relative. The sum involved was astronomical. Sarah felt as though the very air had been sucked from her lungs. She had always thought of Mr. Finch as a friendly, slightly eccentric retiree. He was perpetually in his garden, tending to his prize-winning tomatoes, always willing to share a joke.

She re-read the email, her fingers trembling slightly. The details, the numbers, were overwhelming. She glanced out the window and saw him, as always, meticulously trimming his rose bushes. A wave of dizziness washed over her.

She had been so certain she knew her neighbors. Her own life, the bills, the struggles, seemed suddenly insignificant, trivial. She felt… small.
