"An 'E'?" Mark repeated, his voice barely a whisper. The TA, a young woman with kind eyes, nodded sympathetically. The room swam into focus for the first time. The bright lights in the hallway seemed to pulsate.

He felt a sudden, overwhelming chill sweep through him. His hands started to tremble uncontrollably, the paper in his hands a flimsy shield against the weight of the moment. He lowered his head, his gaze fixed on the worn linoleum floor.

He found himself struggling to find words. The question lodged in his throat, a tight knot of disbelief and confusion. He felt paralyzed, unable to move, trapped in a reality that had suddenly shifted, changed, leaving him completely disoriented.
