Gemotions

The rusted metal box lay half-buried in the overgrown garden, glinting weakly in the pale morning light. Eleanor, mid-fifties and recently widowed, knelt gingerly, her fingers tracing the faded lettering: “For the Future – 1978.” She tilted her head, a soft sigh escaping her lips. She had no recollection of this.

A tremor ran through her, a ripple of something akin to disbelief. She carefully pried the lid open, the hinges protesting with a rusty screech. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed newspaper clippings, lay a small, tarnished silver locket. She lifted it, her hands trembling slightly, and the delicate chain felt impossibly fragile.

She remembered nothing of her youth, of buried treasures. The garden, the house – they were all new to her since her husband’s passing. Still, the locket, somehow, felt achingly familiar.
