The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the neatly manicured lawn, the perfect canvas of green she'd spent years perfecting. Mrs. Gable, with her faded floral dress and kind eyes, stood at the property line, a hesitant smile playing on her lips. She asked, her voice soft as a summer breeze, if she could perhaps use a small patch along the fence for a vegetable garden.

A wave of something akin to paralysis washed over Margaret. Her breath caught in her throat. She found herself nodding before she could even process the request, the simple movement feeling monumental.

Her gaze drifted, taking in the small, worn hands, the creaking of Mrs. Gable’s shoes on the gravel. It was a request she would have never anticipated.

She found herself murmuring a series of yeses, hardly believing the words that were coming from her own mouth. The perfect lawn, the symbol of her meticulous control, was about to be altered. Yet, a strange, profound sense of… something, began to bloom within her chest.
