The grit under her nails was the only thing grounding her. This couldn’t be right. Her grandmother’s ring, the one she’d inherited, now sparkling under the harsh lights of this shop? It was impossible.

She blinked rapidly, trying to clear her vision, as if that would change what was in front of her. The shop was cluttered, crammed with all sorts of forgotten treasures. She squeezed her eyes shut, took a deep breath, and then slowly opened them again. The ring was still there.

She swallowed hard, her throat suddenly dry. "I... I need to see it," she whispered, her voice barely a breath.
