He felt a deep tremor, a shiver running through him, as he identified the ring. It was the ring. His grandmother's ring. The one his grandfather had given her, the one she’d cherished for decades. It was a tangible piece of her; now, it was here.

He felt suddenly detached from himself, a bystander observing a scene he couldn’t comprehend. The shop, filled with strangers, with forgotten objects, seemed to spin around him.

He took a step back, then another. He had to get out, he needed to breathe, needed to... what? He didn’t know.
