The rejection letter was tucked under the door, a neatly printed document that carried a weight far beyond its size. It had the official logo. It had all the usual formalities. It was a brick of reality. Emily stood in the hallway for a moment, unable to move.

She picked up the letter, her hand shaking. Back inside her apartment, she sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the message. She felt as if she had been plunged into a deep, freezing pool. The familiar objects in the room seemed to shift and distort in the dim light. She couldn't focus.
