"So... a fence?" he repeated, his voice sounding hollow, even to his own ears. He stared at the newly-erected posts, straight and imposing. He kept looking at the house across the way.

He felt a pull in his stomach, as if he’d swallowed a cold stone. He had just finished mowing the lawn, and he felt a sudden, profound disconnect to the task. He'd never considered their shared space as something that needed to be divided.

He ran a hand across his forehead, and looked at the sky, suddenly aware of its emptiness.
