The accusation landed like a physical blow. I was stunned, speechless. My mind raced, each thought a disjointed fragment. I kept replaying the events of the last few weeks in my head, trying to pinpoint where I’d gone wrong, how this could have happened. My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the silence.

I remember staring at the printed email, the professor’s terse subject line: “Academic Integrity Violation.” My palms began to sweat as I opened the attachment. The highlighted sections were the same ideas I had had. I’d never copied anything. The world tilted slightly, and I felt a dizzying pressure behind my eyes.

I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. The knot in my stomach tightened. I reread the report, hoping to find some kind of mistake, some explanation, but there was nothing. Just stark, undeniable evidence. I felt utterly adrift.
