Liam had expected a lecture. A stern but loving critique of his last failed experiment, maybe. Instead, the lab was locked. He jiggled the handle, then tried the window. The place was always open. Now, nothing. Empty. He checked the note pinned to the door: "Enjoying retirement. See you never, maybe." His stomach lurched. He’d envisioned a future of late-night discussions about quantum entanglement, not this… this void. He paced the hallway, the polished floors reflecting his confused expression. The air felt thin, difficult to breathe. He wanted to scream.
