The coffee tasted like ash in her mouth. She'd been so sure, so certain. They'd been inseparable for years, sharing goals, supporting each other. Now, the glossy, modern office building, where she was supposed to be, felt like a labyrinth. Chloe found herself constantly checking her phone.

The receptionist's smile seemed overly bright, the ambient music a grating distraction. Outside, the city roared, a symphony of sirens and horns. The interview itself was a blur, a collection of faces and questions she could barely recall.

She kept replaying the awkward moment, when she saw David, her friend, leaving the interview room just before her. He gave her a tight smile. She felt a chill spread through her. The world felt wrong.
