He hadn't expected to see her here. The sheer improbability of it hit him like a physical blow. The music, the chatter, the joy of the occasion – it all felt distant, muffled.

He felt a sudden constriction in his chest, a tightness he couldn't explain. He found himself picking at the corner of a napkin, his fingers restless and twitching. He wished he could simply vanish.

He took a step backwards, bumping into a table laden with desserts. He mumbled an apology, but the words felt hollow, meaningless. He just wanted to escape.
