The email sat in Ethan's inbox, unopened. Subject: "Exciting opportunity!" From Chloe, who worked, supposedly, at a local dog grooming salon. He knew, he *knew*, there was something off about Chloe's constant vacations, her designer clothes, her expensive car. But he'd always dismissed it. Jealousy, he’d told himself. He'd been wrong.

He felt a tightness in his throat, a sensation that made it difficult to breathe. The email's preview text – "Working on a top-secret project…" – only intensified the feeling. He opened it, his heart hammering against his ribs. The offer was for a position at a government think tank.

Ethan leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. The world suddenly felt tilted, unbalanced. All the late-night talks, the shared anxieties, the confessions… were they real? Or were they just part of some elaborate, fabricated story? He didn't know what to think. He felt… adrift.
