The familiar scent of coffee in the morning suddenly turned sour. Carol watched Mark, her husband, slip his phone into his pocket. He was leaving for work. He seemed to avoid her gaze.

She’d heard the hushed conversations at night, the way he would quickly hang up when she entered the room. She was so unsure. The world had tilted. The thought of confronting him seemed both necessary and paralyzing.

She sat at the kitchen table, the untouched coffee growing cold. She felt a strange tingling in her fingertips. She closed her eyes.
