The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Maya's throat. She tugged at the string, pulling down the rickety ladder. Her mother’s things. A lifetime crammed into cardboard boxes, a legacy of knick-knacks and half-forgotten dreams. Reaching into the first container, she felt a prickle of unease. Inside, stacked with meticulous precision, were notebooks. Dozens of them. Her mother's neat, cursive handwriting stared back from the covers.

She picked one up, her fingers tracing the faded ink of the title: "My First Science Project." A childish drawing of a volcano erupted in glitter glue. A slow, creeping heat started in her chest.

Why? Why had she kept all this? It was an invasion, a silent presence from a past she barely knew. A wave of nausea rolled over her. She sank onto an upturned box, the paper edges scratching against her denim jeans.
