"No way," Jackson mumbled, the word barely a whisper. He looked at the list taped to the door, his eyes darting back and forth, searching for a phantom name that wasn't there. His stomach clenched, a physical manifestation of his confusion. He couldn't believe it. He’d dedicated his life to this, sacrificed everything for this one goal.

He backed away from the door, bumping into a locker with a loud clang. He flinched, as if the metal had somehow amplified the dull throb in his head. His legs felt heavy, as if made of lead. He wanted to scream, to smash something, but his throat felt constricted, making it difficult to even swallow. He simply didn't know how to process this information.
