David slumped against the wall, the rough brick scraping against his shoulder. He felt a peculiar numbness spread through his limbs, as though someone had replaced his blood with ice water. He hadn't expected this. Not after the dedication he had shown, the sacrifices he had made.

He felt the ground shift under his feet. The world around him seemed to shrink, closing in on him. He felt a sudden, overpowering urge to flee, to disappear. He closed his eyes, hoping that when he opened them, this nightmare would have vanished, and a different reality would appear in its place.
