The email pinged, a little musical chime that usually meant something exciting. But this time, the chime felt like a shrill alarm. "You have a friend request from: Brittany Davis." The name slammed into her like a physical blow. The Brittany Davis from middle school. The one who'd spread cruel rumors and made her life miserable.

She gripped the edge of her desk, her knuckles white. She couldn’t seem to breathe right. She felt a wave of nausea. She wanted to throw up. She looked around the bright, cheerful office, and her surroundings seemed to have lost all their color. The cheerful faces of her coworkers felt distant, removed.
