"This can’t be right," she muttered, rereading the text. Her carefully chosen outfit suddenly felt constricting, the heels on her shoes suddenly too high. The thought that everyone was not waiting for her caused a feeling of the ground falling out from beneath her.

The beautifully decorated backyard, ready for the party, felt like a stage set for a play that had been abruptly canceled. She slowly started to walk around her backyard.

She sat heavily on one of the empty lawn chairs, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She felt an odd detachment from herself, as if she were watching her own life unfold from a distance.
