He reread the sign again, leaning closer, as if that would somehow change the words. "The Hungry Pelican - Closing." His throat tightened. He thought of all the times he'd taken his kids there, the salty air and the smell of fish and chips.

He felt as though his feet were anchored to the ground. A cold wave seemed to wash over him, leaving him numb. His memories felt suddenly precious and fragile.

He looked at the front door, the paint peeling, the sign crooked, but still so familiar. His entire body felt as if it had suddenly changed shape.
