The cafe smelled of burnt coffee and something floral, like the air freshener was fighting a losing battle. Liam stared across the small, round table at Amelia. Her name was Amelia. He knew her name. He’d told her his. They’d shared a kiss, just last week, at this very table. And now, she was saying…what exactly? He needed to replay her words in his head.

He picked up his half-empty latte, the cup trembling slightly in his grip. The barista had written his name on it. Liam. He’d never felt more disconnected from that name.

Amelia’s eyes were wide. She was still talking, gesturing emphatically. He saw her lips moving, but the words felt muffled, like she was speaking from under water. A sudden pressure built in his chest. He felt like he was going to choke.

“So… you’re telling me,” he croaked, finally managing to interrupt her. His voice sounded far away, alien. “That you… you’re also dating… him?” He gestured vaguely towards the door, as if the mysterious "him" might materialize at any moment.
