The envelope was cream-colored, expensive-looking. Inside, a card. *To my dearest David, I can’t wait to see you tonight! Love, Chloe.* David sat on the edge of his bed, the card trembling slightly in his hand. Chloe. He’d been seeing Chloe for six weeks. He’d been thinking about proposing.

He heard a key in the lock. He quickly tried to shove the card under his mattress, but it was too late. The door opened and a woman, breathtaking in a silk dress, strode in.

"David, darling, I'm so glad you're here!" she said. She stopped short, her face changing in an instant. She stared at the card.

David felt a cold, hollow sensation in his stomach. He was paralyzed, unable to move or speak. The world tilted on its axis. He felt as though he’d stepped into a dream from which he couldn’t wake.
