The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a stark white rectangle against the gentle blue of her desktop background. “DNA Results Available.” She’d half-heartedly swiped the cheek swab a month ago, a silly Christmas gift to herself. Now, she felt a strange pressure in her chest, a tightening that made it difficult to breathe. Her fingers fumbled as she clicked the link.

Scanning the results, a chill snaked up her spine. The percentages, the matches, the distant cousins she’d never known existed – it was all a jumble. One name, though, a woman in another state, stood out: “Potential Biological Mother.” Amelia stared, her jaw slack, the image of her parents, etched in her memory, wavering. She reached for the phone, the world tilting slightly.
