Amelia had spent the last five years creating a new type of organic fertilizer, a breakthrough she was convinced would revolutionize agriculture. Now she’d been scooped.

She ran a hand through her already messy hair, leaving streaks of black ink from where she had been scribbling notes. Her stomach churned. The editor’s polite, but dismissive, tone felt like a physical blow. “Similar technology… already patented… prior art…” the words swam before her eyes.

Amelia’s apartment, usually her sanctuary, felt foreign, cold. Her gaze drifted across her workspace, strewn with soil samples and research papers. All the effort, all the sleepless nights – for nothing. A wave of nausea surged through her.
