The room spun. David had just clicked on the exposé, the article detailing the plagiarism charges against his favorite sci-fi writer, Marcus Cole. He felt as if the ground had been ripped away from under him. The evidence, presented in stark detail, felt undeniable. His jaw dropped.

He’d bought every book Cole had written, followed his every interview. He had the posters and the action figures. He had even named his dog after a character in one of Cole's books. A wave of nausea rolled over him. He felt suddenly ill. He felt the need to lie down.

He stumbled backwards, knocking over his coffee table. He barely noticed. The thought that Cole had stolen his creative work left him stunned. He felt helpless. The world had shifted, its foundation warped.
