Across the sterile room, sat Alex, his face a perfect blank canvas. He stared at the diagram of the brain, completely detached. He’d told her they were friends, best friends, once. Now he looked at her with detached politeness.

She reached out, hesitantly, and touched his hand. The touch was instantly retracted. A deep ache settled in her stomach. The memories were all hers.
