The buffet table was a kaleidoscope of color and scent, but all Elijah could focus on was the sweat beading on his forehead. He kept fiddling with his tie, loosening it, then tightening it again. He could feel everyone’s eyes on him. He hadn’t expected this. Not really. He knew they’d planned a party, but somehow he’d assumed he'd be able to fade into the background. Now, his name was on the itinerary. He was supposed to tell everyone how amazing his mother was. He tried to think of a good story to tell but his brain remained a blank canvas. He spotted his sister across the room and gave her a weak smile. She just winked.
