He’d been looking forward to lunch, a well-deserved break in his busy day. Then, the email. *New Management Team*. The words, printed on a brightly colored flyer, appeared to swim before his eyes. He felt his face flush hot, then cold. He’d invested so much into this job.

He sank back into his chair, the sudden weight of the information pressing down on him. The office noises, the tapping keyboards, the ringing phones, all seemed to fade away. It was as if his ears had suddenly become stuffed with cotton.

He felt a deep hollowness, a sense of having been uprooted. He looked at his lunch, a perfectly packed sandwich and a bag of chips. He suddenly felt no desire to eat. He simply stared, unseeing, at the familiar objects on his desk.
