The silence descended like a physical weight. Carol stared at the closed doors, a strange, hollow feeling settling in her stomach. She turned to Peter, her colleague, who looked equally unsettled. He’d begun tapping his foot, a nervous habit that usually went unnoticed.

"Well, this is... a situation," Peter said, his voice strained. She said nothing. Words were failing her. What could she say?

She tried to rationalize, to remind herself that elevators got stuck all the time. But the logic felt distant, irrelevant. She felt a disquieting sense of being adrift, detached from the familiar routines of her life. She imagined the faces of her family, the comfort of her home.

She rubbed her arms, as if trying to ward off a chill that had nothing to do with the temperature. The world had shifted, its foundation seemed to have crumbled. Now, all that was left was the confined space, the hum of the machine, and the unsettling feeling of not knowing.
