The news arrived in a curt, impersonal email. Sarah closed her laptop, her breath catching in her throat. Professor Ito, her advisor, accepting a position at a different institution. A different *country*. She felt a profound sense of dislocation, like her entire trajectory had been thrown into disarray.

She wandered aimlessly through her apartment, the silence amplifying the turmoil within her. The carefully curated research materials, the post-it notes, the diagrams – they all seemed irrelevant now. She felt a growing sense of detachment, as if she were watching her life from a distant shore.

The walls around her seemed to be closing in, shrinking the space she had once called home. She needed air, needed to be outside, but she couldn't seem to move.
