The chair squeaked as Miles shifted uncomfortably. He hadn't expected this. Professor Schmidt, leaving. He felt his face flush. He needed to get a grip.

He stood up and walked to the window, staring out at the parking lot, at the cars moving around, as though he could make sense of everything by watching them. He felt a creeping sense of unease, a disquiet that settled in his bones.

He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. The words of his thesis, once so clear, now seemed obscured by a sudden fog. He felt a coldness creeping through him.
