The fluorescent lights of the office seemed to hum a discordant tune, a sound that grated on Amelia's nerves. She’d been ready for this promotion, diligently ticking off every box, exceeding expectations, even volunteering for the graveyard shift to prove her dedication. Now, staring at the email congratulating David, she felt a hollow ache in her chest, a physical weight she hadn't anticipated.

Her fingers traced the edge of her coffee mug, the ceramic cool against her skin. She had to swallow back the rising tide in her throat. This didn't make any sense.

She found herself staring at the framed photo on her desk, a picture of her and her mother from a recent hiking trip. Her mother, always so encouraging, would say something like, "Dust yourself off, Amelia, and try again."

The thought of 'trying again' felt like traversing a vast, uncharted expanse. She slumped in her chair, the cheerful office sounds – clicking keyboards, ringing phones – now echoing with a strange, dissonant quality.
