"No, no, no," Jessica kept repeating, shaking her head as she reread the official document. She sat at her kitchen table, the air in the room heavy, the silence deafening. The letter stated she had a half-sister she didn't know about.

She felt a wave of nausea wash over her. It was a dizzying, disorienting experience. She looked around at the familiar objects, the coffee maker, the fruit bowl, the window sill. They all appeared different. Distorted.

She pushed back her chair. She felt a desperate need to move, to do something, anything, to break free from the suffocating shock. She needed to breathe. She opened the front door and stepped outside, not knowing where she was going.
