The package arrived anonymously, a small, unassuming box wrapped in brown paper. Mr. Davies hesitated before opening it, a sense of deep disquiet settling in his stomach. He’d been a teacher for over thirty years. He'd received flowers, cards, even a bottle of wine. Never anything like this.

He slowly peeled back the tape. Inside, nestled in tissue paper, was a smooth, grey stone, carved with a single, intricate symbol he didn't recognize. He picked it up, turning it over and over in his hands. It felt cool and heavy, a constant reminder of the sender.

He glanced around his empty living room, the quiet hum of the refrigerator the only sound. A tremor went through him, an almost involuntary shudder. He wasn't sure why, but he felt a sense of foreboding, a vague but undeniable sense of wrongness.
