The phone call from her father was sharp and to the point. “Get home, we’ll figure this out.” Maria hung up the phone. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears.

She went to her desk and started gathering her things. Her books, her laptop, all the things that represented her life here. She felt a knot forming in the pit of her stomach. The packing itself felt like a surreal exercise.

She did not know where she was going or what she would do. All her plans and goals seemed to have turned into an indistinct mist. Her future had vanished.
