The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across Mrs. Gable’s meticulously manicured lawn. Sarah stood, the clippers still dangling from her hand, as the woman from next door, Mr. Henderson, approached her. He had a sheepish look, hands shoved deep in his pockets.

"Sarah, could I have a quick word?" His voice was unusually soft, almost hesitant.

Sarah swallowed, the sudden dryness in her mouth making it hard to speak. The air felt thick, the vibrant green of the grass seemed to press in on her. She just nodded, her gaze darting between his face and the offending oak tree, which stood proudly straddling the property line.

"It's about the tree," Mr. Henderson began, a nervous tick twitching at his eye. "I was thinking... well, I was wondering..." He trailed off, staring intently at the ground. Her heart hammered against her ribs; the sudden request was just so...unexpected. It didn't make sense.
