The request had come via email, a formal missive from Mr. Petrov, who lived three houses down. He'd outlined his proposal, a sharing of the shared backyard fence, a collaboration. Sarah read it twice, then a third time, each reading seeming to make less sense than the last.

Her hand trembled slightly as she closed the laptop. The email’s polite language and the detailed plans it contained felt somehow… alien. Her pulse quickened. She wandered into the living room, staring out the window at her own perfectly symmetrical lawn. She felt a need to sit down, and after she did, a desperate need to stand up again. She paced in circles, as if something were trying to escape from within her.
