The fence would block the sun from her prized rose garden. Mrs. Abernathy, who never said hello and whose only interest in the neighborhood seemed to be to complain, wanted to ruin everything. She'd been hearing rumors, and the plans she'd heard were terrible.

He could feel his pulse racing, his temples throbbing. He sat at the kitchen table, staring out the window. She had a knot in his stomach.

He was filled with the urge to do something, anything, but didn't know how. He stood up. He walked to the door. He turned around. He looked at the floor, and just sat back down.
