The promotion he had been expecting, the one that would have justified the years of loyalty and hard work, went to the younger, less experienced Emily. He didn’t say anything outwardly, forcing a smile during the congratulatory meeting.

He retreated to his cubicle, the walls closing in. He felt a throbbing ache in his temples, a dull pressure that grew with each passing minute. The hum of the computer fans seemed to amplify the silence.

He started arriving early and staying late, working harder, faster, and more efficiently. He was trying to prove something, even to himself, but he couldn't quite identify what it was. Every success felt hollow, tainted by the injustice.
