The cheap, flickering candlelight in the dive bar did nothing to soothe the burning in Leo's throat. He watched as Chloe, his supposed girlfriend, leaned in close to another man, her laughter the same as it had been with him. He felt hollow.

He’d always felt, at least until now, as though there was some level of uniqueness in his connection with her.

His fingers tightened around his pint glass, the cold glass offering a temporary distraction. He felt a deep, twisting sensation in his gut. The same stories, the same shared secrets, now echoing in another man's ears. He downed the rest of his drink in one go.
